Questionnaire conclusions (part 1)

It’s been a month since I posted a questionnaire, and a total of 273 people have responded (I have 14000 followers on twitter, come on! 😒).

Below, I will analyse it and draw some conclusions:

Question 1: I’m interested in…

• NSFW: To be honest… I’m not surprised by the overwhelming interest 😉. This was a predictable response 😅. What does surprise me is that 1 person responded that they have no interest 😵. So, NSFW It’s the central pillar of what people want.
• Webcomic: In general, there is some interest. I’m happy with this because I consider the webcomic to be more of a personal whim than an effort to do something that people want to see 😅. I believe that making intellectual property is beneficial for an artist (especially in the future).
• OCs drawings: There is quite a lot of interest, more than in the webcomic. I’m not surprised, as it’s easier to consume individual illustrations than to commit to a series. Like the webcomic, I think it helps build loyalty and fan base.
• Fan art: There is moderate interest, but it isn’t a priority. Although it isn’t specified what the fan art is about, so these responses could vary greatly. But in general, it’s obvious that people are interested in fan art as a concept.
• View other people’s commissions: This one did surprise me; I expected a great deal of indifference. I’ve always thought that people don’t care much about seeing the commissions that other people request, so working on commissions has always seemed a bit like sabotaging myself (with the sole consolation of the financial exchange). Even so, I don’t quite believe it.
• Buying a commission: There is enough interest in purchasing a commission, but a lot of interest does not mean a lot of direct commissions. I didn’t know if interest had declined with the rise of AI. Perhaps it has (I don’t have any data prior to AI to compare it with), but I can assume that people are still excited about having an artist they admire make a personalised drawing for them.

Question 2: Rank by interest

1. As before, I am not surprised that NSFW is the top interest.
2. The second interest is OC illustrations, but webcomics are so close behind that I consider them to be almost equal.
3. Although OC illustrations stand out in third place, I have to say that fan art appears strongly.
4. It is very striking to me that fan art is the least interesting among the responses.

In general, the main interest is NSFW, then OC-related content (the webcomic and illustrations), and finally, fan art is welcome but not expected.

Question 3: Rank the NSFW categories

1. Long Comic: This is where the greatest interest lies, closely followed by the short comic.
2. Short Comics: Dominates as the second choice, but has a decent presence as the first and third choice. It is not the absolute favourite, but everyone likes it.
3. One-page Comics: Seems to be acceptable content, but not exciting.
4. Big Illustrations: People choose this as their fourth choice; it does not seem to be a priority.

In summary, the more pages, the more interest.

• But here’s an important fact: the Long Comic although it is the 1st interest also stands out as 4th. That means that in general, the Long Comic either captivates or bores, with no middle ground.
• On the other hand, the second most valued content, the Short Comic, stands out in all positions except 4th. That means that everyone likes Short Comic format.

Logic would dictate that I should focus on making long comics, but here’s a problem that isn’t mentioned in the survey:

If the Long Comic is about an uninteresting character (like Alyn or a new character, like the one I’m doing now for the Year of the Horse), I run the risk that over the long term (it takes a long time to make a Long Comic), people will get bored with my content.

So to avoid this, I think it’s better to focus on Short Comics.

Question 4: Rank my OCs by preference

1. The greatest interest is in Miia, which was obvious to me, but it seems that certain content related to Neka has spread on Reddit, causing the redhead to rise many positions (she was around the middle).
2. As a second choice, those who selected Miia as their first choice tend to choose Neka as their second choice. Even so, those who do not choose Miia as their first choice usually mark Miia as their second choice.
3. Leiko is third and Alyn is fourth. To be honest, I thought it would be the other way around; I thought Alyn would be more popular.
4. I thought the development of new OCs would have a more relevant position, like 3rd or 4th, but I didn’t expect it to be in 5th. I didn’t imagine there would be so much interest in Leiko and Alyn. Many people actively “reject” the development of new OCs; they want to see Miia and Neka.
5. As we’ve seen throughout the survey, fan art isn’t something people come to me for. They want to see the OCs. Fan art is neither sought after nor expected.
